Fence enclosures require access points through which people, their possessions, and various equipment can pass. A standard residential enclosure will usually have a pedestrian or walk gate on each street facing side of the home. A standard gate is 4' wide, an ideal size for pedestrian traffic. Alternatively, a 5' width provides egress for lawn maintenance equipment and small machines. Double gates - widths of 6' or more - are an option for when larger objects or machines will need to routinely pass. All walk gates, regardless of material or design, have both a hinge and latch post. The gates operate, or swing, on their hinges, and then latch - or connect - to the second post.
